How to use this calculator

  • Enter the original price.
  • Choose whether the discount is a percentage or a fixed amount, then enter it.
  • Optionally choose a tax option: add tax to a tax-exclusive price, or tell the calculator the price already includes tax.
  • The result shows the final price, savings and any tax.

Formula

  • Percentage discount: discount = price × percent ÷ 100
  • Fixed discount: effective percent = discount ÷ price × 100
  • discounted price = price − discount

The discount is always applied first.

  • Tax-exclusive prices: final = discounted × (1 + tax rate ÷ 100)
  • Tax-inclusive prices: the final price is the discounted price, and the tax inside it is discounted − discounted ÷ (1 + tax rate ÷ 100).

Worked example

30% off 120, plus 8% sales tax

Discount: 120 × 0.30 = 36, so the discounted price is 84.

Tax: 84 × 0.08 = 6.72.

Final price: 90.72, and you save 36.

A tax-inclusive price

An item costs 84 after discount, including 20% VAT. The price before tax is 84 ÷ 1.20 = 70, so it contains 14 of VAT. You still pay 84.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Amounts are rounded to two decimal places for display.
  • Stores may round differently or apply discounts after tax; check the receipt rules where you shop.
  • Stacked discounts (for example 20% then a further 10%) are not the same as a single 30% discount — apply them one at a time.

Frequently asked questions

Is 20% off then 10% off the same as 30% off?

No. 20% then 10% leaves 0.8 × 0.9 = 72% of the price, which is a 28% total discount, not 30%.

Should tax be calculated before or after the discount?

In most places sales tax is charged on the price actually paid, so this calculator applies the discount first. Local rules can differ for coupons and manufacturer rebates.
