How to use this calculator
- Enter the bill amount and the tip percentage, or tap a preset.
- Enter how many people are sharing.
- Tick Round each person’s share up if you prefer whole amounts; the tip increases slightly to match.
Formula
tip = bill × tip % ÷ 100, rounded to the nearest cent, and total = bill + tip.
To split fairly, the total is converted to cents and divided by the number of people. Any leftover cents are given one each to some people, so the shares always add up exactly to the total.
Worked example
84.50 with an 18% tip, split three ways
Tip: 84.50 × 0.18 = 15.21. Total: 99.71.
9,971 cents ÷ 3 = 3,323 with 2 cents left over, so two people pay 33.24 and one pays 33.23.
Assumptions and limitations
- Tipping customs vary widely by country; in some places service is included or tipping is not expected.
- The tip is calculated on the amount you enter. If you want to tip on the pre-tax amount, enter that amount.
- Amounts are not tied to a currency.
Frequently asked questions
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Customs differ. Many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal; enter whichever amount you want the percentage to apply to.
Why do some people pay one cent more?
Some totals cannot be split exactly. Giving the leftover cents to a few people makes the shares add up to the bill precisely.
