Assessments or subjects

Grading systems differ between schools and countries. The boundaries below are only an example — edit them to match yours. Each grade applies from its minimum percentage upwards.

How to use this calculator

  • For each assessment, enter the marks obtained and the maximum marks. Add or remove rows as needed.
  • Turn on Convert the percentage to a letter grade to apply grade boundaries.
  • The boundaries start as an example scale. Edit the labels and minimum percentages to match your school, college or exam board.

Formula

percentage = total marks obtained ÷ total maximum marks × 100

Each grade boundary applies from its minimum percentage upwards. The calculator picks the highest boundary that your percentage reaches.

Worked example

Three assessments

42/50, 68/80 and 18/20.

Total: 128 out of 150 = 85.33%. With the example boundaries (A ≥ 90, B ≥ 80, C ≥ 70…) that is a B.

Assumptions and limitations

  • There is no universal grading system. The example boundaries are illustrative only.
  • Combining marks this way gives larger assessments more influence. If your course weights components differently (for example coursework 40%, exam 60%), use the Weighted Average calculator.
  • Marks above the maximum (bonus marks) are allowed and flagged.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my overall percentage different from the average of my percentages?

This calculator adds all marks together, so an assessment out of 100 counts more than one out of 20. Averaging the individual percentages would give every assessment equal weight instead.

Can I use pass/merit/distinction instead of letters?

Yes. Grade labels are free text, so you can enter any scheme, such as Pass 40, Merit 60, Distinction 70.
