URL Encoder and Decoder
Percent-encode text so it is safe in a URL, decode encoded links back to readable text, and see each query parameter of a URL.
Result
Enter text or a URL to encode or decode.
How to use this tool
- Choose Encode or Decode and paste your text.
- When encoding, pick Query value / path segment for a single parameter value, or Whole URL to keep : / ? & = intact.
- When decoding, + is treated as a space by default (HTML form encoding).
- If the text is a full URL, its query parameters are listed in a table.
How it works
Characters that are not allowed in URLs are converted to UTF-8 bytes and written as % followed by two hex digits. “Query value” encoding (encodeURIComponent) also escapes reserved characters such as & = / ? #, while “Whole URL” encoding (encodeURI) leaves them so the URL structure is preserved.
Example
Encoding a value
“a b&c=d/é” → a%20b%26c%3Dd%2F%C3%A9
Decoding a query
In https://example.com/p?q=hello+world&x=1 the parameters are q = hello world and x = 1.
Privacy and limitations
- Processing happens in your browser.
- An invalid sequence such as a lone % cannot be decoded and is reported as an error.
Frequently asked questions
Should a space be %20 or +?
In paths and most URLs a space is %20. HTML forms encode spaces in query strings as +. Both decode to a space here unless you untick that option.
Why is my URL double-encoded?
Encoding an already-encoded string turns % into %25. Decode it first, then encode once.
