Result
Start typing or paste text to count words and characters.
How to use this tool
- Type or paste your text into the box. Counts update as you type.
- The result shows words and characters first, with sentences, paragraphs, lines, reading time and size below.
- The Most frequent words table ignores very common words such as “the” and “and”.
How it works
- Words are runs of letters or digits; apostrophes and hyphens inside a word keep it together, so “it’s” and “well-known” count once.
- Characters are counted as you see them, so an emoji with a skin tone counts as one.
- Sentences end with . ! ? or …
- Paragraphs are separated by a blank line.
- Reading time assumes 238 words per minute and speaking time 150 words per minute.
Example
A short passage
“Hello world. It’s a test!” followed by a blank line and “Second paragraph here?” has 8 words, 49 characters, 3 sentences and 2 paragraphs.
Privacy and limitations
- Your text is processed in your browser and is never sent to our server.
- Languages written without spaces (such as Chinese or Japanese) are counted by runs of characters, so word counts may differ from dedicated tools for those languages.
- Some publishers and platforms count words differently (for example hyphenated words or numbers); use their own count when a limit is strict.
Frequently asked questions
Do spaces count as characters?
The main character count includes spaces and line breaks. “Characters (no spaces)” excludes all whitespace — useful for limits that ignore spaces.
How long is 1,000 words?
Roughly two single-spaced pages, about 4 minutes of reading and about 7 minutes of speaking.
