How to use this calculator
- Enter your current grade, covering everything except the final, as a percentage.
- Enter how much the final is worth as a percentage of the overall grade.
- Enter the overall grade you want. The table shows what different final scores would give you.
Formula
overall = current × (1 − w) + final × w, where w is the final’s weight as a decimal.
Rearranged: final needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w
Worked example
Aiming for 80%
Current grade 85%, final worth 30%, target 80%.
(80 − 85 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = (80 − 59.5) ÷ 0.3 = 68.33% needed on the final.
Assumptions and limitations
- Assumes the current grade already reflects all completed work with its correct weights and that the final is the last assessment.
- Some courses also require a minimum score on the final itself; check your syllabus.
