How to use this calculator
- Type one number per row. Use Add number for more rows or the bin icon to remove one.
- Or open “Paste a list of numbers” to paste values separated by spaces, new lines or semicolons.
- Empty rows are skipped and the result tells you how many were skipped. Anything that is not a number is flagged as an error, never silently ignored.
Formula
mean = (x₁ + x₂ + … + xₙ) ÷ n
The median is the middle value after sorting (or the average of the two middle values when there is an even count). The range is maximum − minimum.
Worked example
Five test scores
Scores: 72, 85, 90, 64, 79.
Sum = 390, count = 5, so the mean is 390 ÷ 5 = 78.
Sorted: 64, 72, 79, 85, 90, so the median is 79, the minimum 64, the maximum 90 and the range 26.
Assumptions and limitations
- Every value counts equally. If some values should count more, use the Weighted Average calculator.
- The mean is sensitive to outliers; the median is often a better summary for skewed data such as incomes or house prices.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between mean, median and mode?
The mean is the sum divided by the count. The median is the middle value. The mode is the most frequent value. This calculator shows the mean and median.
Can I include negative numbers and decimals?
Yes. Negative numbers and decimals are fully supported.
