How to use this calculator
- Choose whether your amount excludes tax (tax will be added) or includes tax (tax will be removed).
- Enter the amount and the tax rate that applies to you.
- The result shows the net amount, the tax and the gross amount.
Formula
- Adding tax:
tax = net × rate ÷ 100andgross = net + tax - Removing tax:
net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)andtax = gross − net
A common mistake is to remove tax by subtracting the rate from the gross amount. Taking 20% off 120 gives 96, but the correct net amount is 120 ÷ 1.2 = 100.
Worked example
Adding 8.25% sales tax to 250
250 × 0.0825 = 20.625, rounded to 20.63. Total: 270.63.
Removing 19% VAT from 119
119 ÷ 1.19 = 100 net, so the price includes 19 of VAT.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between sales tax and VAT?
Sales tax is usually charged once, at the final sale to the consumer. VAT is charged at each stage of production and distribution, with businesses reclaiming the VAT they paid. For a shopper, both add a percentage to the price.
Why are prices shown with tax in some countries and without in others?
Many countries with VAT require consumer prices to include tax, while in places like the United States sales tax is usually added at the till.
