How to use this tool

  • Choose Version 4 for fully random IDs or Version 7 for IDs that sort by creation time (good for database keys).
  • Choose how many, and optionally uppercase or remove hyphens, then select Generate.
  • Switch to Inspect a UUID to see the version, variant and, for v1/v6/v7, the time it was created.

How it works

A UUID is 128 bits written as 32 hex digits. In version 4, 122 bits are random and 6 bits mark the version and variant. In version 7 (RFC 9562), the first 48 bits are the Unix time in milliseconds and the rest are random, so UUIDs created later sort after earlier ones. Random bits come from the browser’s Web Crypto API.

Example

A version 7 UUID

A v7 UUID created at 2023-11-14 22:13:20 UTC starts with 018bcfe5-6800-7… — the first 12 hex digits are the timestamp.

Privacy and limitations

  • UUIDs are generated in your browser and never sent to us.
  • The chance of two random v4 UUIDs colliding is negligible for practical purposes.
  • UUIDs are identifiers, not secrets — don’t use them as passwords or security tokens.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use UUID v4 or v7?

Use v7 for database primary keys because time-ordered IDs keep indexes efficient. Use v4 when you do not want the creation time to be visible.

Is a GUID the same as a UUID?

Yes. GUID is Microsoft’s name for the same 128-bit identifier format.
