How to use this tool
- Add an image, then click or tap any point on it to read that pixel’s colour.
- The palette below shows the image’s dominant colours with the share of the image each covers. Click a swatch to copy its HEX code.
- Choose how many palette colours you want.
How it works
The picked colour is read directly from the image’s pixels. The palette uses the median-cut algorithm: all pixels are placed in one box of colour space, which is repeatedly split along its widest colour channel until the requested number of boxes exists. Each swatch is the average colour of one box. Transparent pixels are ignored.
Example
A two-colour graphic
An image that is two-thirds red and one-third blue gives a two-colour palette of red (67%) and blue (33%).
Privacy and limitations
- The image is analysed on your device and never uploaded.
- Very large images are displayed and sampled at up to 1,600 px, so a single picked pixel may be a slight average of neighbouring pixels.
- Colours on screen depend on your display; the codes are the values stored in the file.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between HEX, RGB and HSL?
They describe the same colour differently: HEX and RGB give red, green and blue amounts; HSL gives hue (colour angle), saturation and lightness, which is easier to adjust by hand.
Why doesn’t the palette match what I expect?
The palette reflects how much of the image each colour covers, so large backgrounds dominate. Pick small accent colours directly instead.
