How to use this calculator

  • Enter your current age, retirement age and savings so far.
  • Add your monthly contribution and how much it rises each year.
  • Choose an expected return, inflation and a withdrawal rate (4% is a common starting point).

Formula

Each month the balance grows by the annual return ÷ 12 and the contribution is added at the month’s end. Contributions rise once a year by the percentage you choose. The result is also shown in today’s money by dividing by (1 + inflation)^years. Retirement income = final balance × withdrawal rate.

Worked example

One year of saving

Saving 100 a month for a year at 12% gives 100 × ((1.01¹² − 1) ÷ 0.01) ≈ 1,268.25.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Everything runs in your browser; nothing you enter is uploaded or stored.
  • Returns vary from year to year; a steady average is assumed. Fees, taxes and pensions from employers or the state are not included.

Frequently asked questions

What return should I use?

Long-run averages for a balanced portfolio are often 4–7% a year before inflation, but nothing is guaranteed. Try a cautious and an optimistic figure.

What is the 4% rule?

A rule of thumb that withdrawing about 4% of your savings in the first year, then adjusting for inflation, has historically lasted around 30 years. It is a guide, not a promise.
