Type text or paste bytes to convert.

How to use this tool

  • Choose Text → bytes or Bytes → text, and the number system.
  • When encoding, choose the separator and whether to add prefixes such as 0x.
  • When decoding, separate bytes with spaces or commas; hex and binary without separators are split into whole bytes.

How it works

Text is first encoded as UTF-8 bytes, then each byte (0–255) is written in the chosen base: 8 binary digits, 2 hex digits, up to 3 decimal digits or 3 octal digits. ASCII characters take one byte; é takes two (C3 A9); emoji take four.

Example

Hi é

In hex: 48 69 20 C3 A9. In binary: 01001000 01101001 00100000 11000011 10101001.

Privacy and limitations

  • Everything runs in your browser; nothing you enter is uploaded or stored.
  • Decoding expects UTF-8; bytes in other encodings (such as Windows-1252) may be reported as invalid.

Frequently asked questions

Why does é become two bytes?

UTF-8 uses one byte for basic English letters and two to four bytes for other characters, so it can represent every language.

Is binary encoding a form of encryption?

No. Anyone can convert the bytes back to text; it only changes how the same data is written.
