Separate values with spaces or commas.

Result

Enter a matrix and choose an operation.

How to use this calculator

  • Type each row on its own line, with values separated by spaces or commas.
  • Choose an operation; matrix B appears when needed.

Formula

Determinants use Gaussian elimination with partial pivoting; inverses use Gauss–Jordan elimination. A × B requires A’s columns to equal B’s rows.

Worked example

A 2 × 2 matrix

For [[1, 2], [3, 4]], the determinant is −2 and the inverse is [[−2, 1], [1.5, −0.5]].

Assumptions and limitations

  • Everything runs in your browser; nothing you enter is uploaded or stored.
  • Calculations use floating-point numbers; values are rounded to 6 decimals for display.

Frequently asked questions

Why has my matrix no inverse?

Its determinant is 0 (it is singular): its rows are not independent, so no matrix can undo it.

Is A × B the same as B × A?

Usually not — matrix multiplication is not commutative.
