Formula
Each formula adds a fixed amount per inch of height over 5 feet (152.4 cm). Values in kg, men / women:
- Devine: 50 / 45.5 + 2.3 per inch
- Robinson: 52 / 49 + 1.9 / 1.7 per inch
- Miller: 56.2 / 53.1 + 1.41 / 1.36 per inch
- Hamwi: 48 / 45.5 + 2.7 / 2.2 per inch
Healthy BMI range: 18.5 × height² to 24.9 × height² (height in meters).
Worked example
A man, 180 cm
180 cm is about 10.87 inches over 5 feet. Devine 75.0 kg, Robinson 72.6 kg, Miller 71.5 kg, Hamwi 77.3 kg — a range of 71.5–77.3 kg. The healthy BMI range is 59.9–80.7 kg.
Assumptions and limitations
- These formulas were created mainly to estimate medication doses, not as personal targets.
- They ignore age, muscle mass and frame size.
- They are not defined for heights under 5 ft; only the BMI range is shown then.
